Overview
I am a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In between my constant coffee addiction and cheering for Bucky the Badger, I study strategic communications and reporting within the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Also, I am pursing my Certificate in Business (essentially a business minor with a different name) through the Wisconsin School of Business.
Now, you are probably asking yourself: what has this kid done that makes him so darn special ?
My main focus is Journalism and Mass Communications. Within the “J-School”, I am pursing both the strategic communications and reporting track. What’s unique about the School of Journalism and Mass Communication is that it does not lock students into one specific area like advertising or photojournalism. Instead, students like myself learn from a “platform agnostic” curriculum to master the key practices of communication (brevity, consistency, accuracy, etc.) and then apply them to all forms of media.
In my opinion, the J School’s education formula works well because you get a “taste of everything”. The role of ethics play an important part of my education. I believe that the mindset of “taking the right steps”, even if it means making a little less profit or working more hours during the week, is crucial to a successful business and life.
In addition, I am working towards a Certificate in Business through the Wisconsin School of Business. The field of modern communications requires that leaders have a basic understanding of finance, accounting and marketing. Thought the CIB program, I have and will continue to learn about business theory in different courses.
